NOTE 01

Hiragana basics

Hiragana is one of the writing systems used in Japanese. Begin with these five characters and their romanized readings.

あa
いi
うu
えe
おo

Read them slowly: a, i, u, e, o. Roman letters are a starting point; listening to Japanese audio will help you learn the sounds. Explore the Japan Foundation’s kana chart

NOTE 02

Three everyday kanji

A kanji can have more than one reading. Here is one common word for each character.

  • 山 — やま — yama — mountain
  • 川 — かわ — kawa — river
  • 水 — みず — mizu — water

Try this: look at a character, cover the reading, and say the word. Then check your answer.
